Capacity & Excellence Grant Awarded For Preserve Work

While there are many invasive species found on Genesee Valley Conservancy nature preserves, a $14,300 grant will help the organization document these species and prioritize their removal.

Not all invasives cause the same harm. This grant will allow us to inventory species on our preserves, map their locations, and document their abundance.

Next, a set of procedures will be established to determine the threat and the practicality of removal for each species.

This information will allow staff to schedule stewardship and volunteers to make the largest positive impact.

An invasive species that exists only in a few spots might be a high priority to remove so it does not spread.

A widespread infestation may require a multi-year plan to concentrate the species to just a core area.

Funding provided is from the NYS Conservation Partnership Program and NY’s Environmental Protection Fund, administered by the Land Trust Alliance in coordination with the NY-DEC.
