Trout Unlimited Helps Support Fishing at Gully Preserve

One of the compelling features of The Gully Preserve is the trout stream that flows through the property, creating beautiful waterfalls to view while also providing important habitat for trout.

Thanks to support from the Canandaigua Chapter of Trout Unlimited, a national group working to conserve freshwater streams and upland habitat for trout and people, we have adopted three fishing regulations to ensure responsible recreation can take place in this sensitive habitat.

The chapter also helped fund signage to inform users of these fishing rules that need to be followed on the property:

  1. Catch and Release Only
The trout here are smaller and its important to keep this area as stock nursery for downstream.

  2. Only Use Barbless Hooks
Barbs can easily injure fish when being removed.

  3. Only Use Artificial Lures
Live bait tends to get swallowed deeper by fish, increasing the chance a hook cannot be removed.

Thanks to Trout Unlimited for helping support our work to conserve this important stream for trout and people in Wayland, Stueben County!
