New Bridge Built at Indian Fort Nature Preserve

The Indian Fort Nature Preserve has a new bridge thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and a lumber donation by Glenn Steed of Steed Energy!

Tom Wilson of Geneseo drafted a design for the bridge after meeting with Land Steward Lina at the site and staking out the new crossing.

Once the plan was finalized, Lina first worked with volunteers to dismantle encroaching foot bridges at another preserve. These old deck boards were then repurposed for new bridge. Next, volunteers gathered for three workdays to dig the footers of the bridge, mix and pour concrete for those footers, and build the wooden bridge itself. New lumber was used for the support structure to ensure it was solid.

The Conservancy’s Preserve Maintenance Fund1 covered the costs of tools and other materials needed for this project. The twenty-foot-long bridge was finished in late September.

The bridge is located along the Jones Bridge Trail, which runs parallel to the road along the northern boundary of the preserve. The trail itself is relatively new too, and reroutes hikers away from the muddier sections of trail. With this bridge, hikers can now take the Jones Bridge Trail to see the falls and forgo the mud.

To see the new bridge and trail, walk from the parking lot to the pond, head to your right around the pond. The new trail extends from the pond and follows Jones Bridge Road.
