Invasive Species Strike Team Leader
Help oversee an Invasive Species Strike Team and provide targeted, organized manual labor to execute the invasive species management plan for each of Genesee Valley Conservancy’s preserves.
Duties
Invasive Species Management (75%)
Assist in overseeing the Invasive Species Strike Team and removing invasive species on nature preserves; responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Coordinating and leading Strike Team to accomplish established goals and objectives
Using a variety of invasive species removal techniques, including hand and power tools
Disposing of invasive plant material
Assisting with vegetation surveys and updating invasive species management plans
Habitat restoration work, including tree and shrub planting
Making independent decisions based on experience and judgement
Nature Preserve Maintenance (20%)
Assist with general maintenance and improvements on nature preserves; responsibilities including but not limited to:
General trail clearing; including weed whacking, mulching, raking, hand-sawing, etc.
Infrastructure maintenance and improvements; sign installation, painting/staining, etc.
Litter pick-up and disposal
Administrative (5%)
Volunteer coordination, data organization, and mapping via GIS ArcPro
Other
All work will be completed in accordance with organizational policies and procedures and up to standards of the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. Position requires independent and collaborative work.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or working towards a degree in environmental science, ecology, biology, geoscience, or other conservation-related field
Ability to recognize New York plant species, especially invasive species
Ability to oversee and work with a team of 4-6 individuals
Knowledge of computers, tablets, cameras, ESRI ArcPro, Microsoft Word/Excel
Valid NYS driver’s license and reliable transportation to be used during work. Includes transporting tools and materials to and from worksites.
Physically fit and able to walk up to 5 miles on varied and difficult terrain with equipment
Good interpersonal skills including writing, email, phone, and in-person communication, including public speaking
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading a team of two or more people
Knowledge of recommended invasive species removal techniques
Experience conducting vegetation surveys and removing invasive species
DEC pesticide certification or experience using herbicides
Experience safely using and maintaining hand tools and equipment, including power tools
Supervisor: Land Steward/Stewardship Director
Location: This position is based out of Geneseo, NY and will require travel to worksites within an approximately 30-minute drive in the Genesee River watershed.
Hours: 32 hours/week | 384 total hours
Benefits
Hourly wage: $23 per hour
NYS Sick Time: accrues at a rate of 1 hour per 30 hours worked
Mileage reimbursed at federal rate for all work travel with personal vehicle
Training as determined by Genesee Valley Conservancy
