Eagle Scout Project Expands Trails at Mill Creek

Boy Scout Sawyer Barron of Troop 38 in Dansville has created a new trail at Mill Creek Nature Preserve in Wayland.

Sawyer first reached out to the Conservancy regarding his Eagle project in April. After volunteering at Indian Fort Nature Preserve, working on a trail there and bouncing ideas back and forth with Land Steward Lina Clifford, he and Lina agreed that creating a trail at Mill Creek would be a great project.

Lina supplied Sawyer with a digital map which he followed using an app on his phone—allowing him to see where on the preserve he was in real time. Using this app, Sawyer flagged the trail that the Conservancy had drawn out. After making adjustments and finalizing the route, Sawyer coordinated workdays with his troop and community members to complete the trail. It took a combined 50+ hours of work to create the trail by moving downed trees and branches, removing small saplings, and raking the pathway. This approximately quarter mile of new trail creates a longer loop on the far side of the property, opposite the creek from the parking lot, and trail blazes will be painted soon. Contact the Conservancy if you are interested in completing an Eagle Scout project at one of our preserves!
